CARL TH. DREYER:
LEAVES OUT OF THE BOOK OF SATAN

CARL TH.DREYER: LEAVES OUT OF THE BOOK OF SATAN LEAVES OUT OF THE BOOK OF SATAN (1920) is the third film directed by Danish master Carl Theodor Dreyer (The President, Once Upon a Time, The Passion of Joan of Arc.) Inspired in part by D.W. Griffith’s Intolerance, the film presents four episodes describing how Satan must walk the Earth and tempt men to evil. The first episode tells the story of the betrayal of Jesus by Judas. The second episode, set in 16th-century Spain, presents Satan as a Grand Inquisitor, who manipulates a tormented young monk into committing an ugly rape. The third episode takes place during the French Revolution, and the final episode portrays a family tragedy during the Finnish civil war of 1918. The script was written in 1913 by Danish author Edgard Høyer (the final episode was originally set during the Russo-Japanese War); it is an original work and owes nothing to Marie Corelli’s 1895 bestseller The Sorrows of Satan, filmed by D.W. Griffith in 1926.

This DVD presents a HD transfer from a restored duplication negative, and represents the most complete version of the film available.

Bonus features of the disc include an alternate ending of LEAVES OUT OF THE BOOK OF SATAN, an extra reel of unedited material from the production, and a biography of director Carl Th. Dreyer.
