Olga Preobrazhenskaia's THE PEASANT WOMEN OF RIAZAN Screening at MoMA

On Sunday, October 29th, at 2pm, and later, on Tuesday, November 7th, at 7pm, Olga Preobrazhenskaia’s 1927 film THE PEASANT WOMEN OF RIAZAN will play at the Museum of Modern Art in the program After Alice, Beyond Lois: Mining the Archive with the Women Film Pioneers Project. GME distributes the work of over 100 women filmmakers, including Preobrazhenskaia. Her film is currently available to the North American university market, from GME, in the six-disc Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack EARLY WOMEN FILMMAKERS: AN INTERNATIONAL ANTHOLOGY.

Filmmaker Abigail Child’s MUTINY, the second installment of Child’s ambitious IS THIS WHAT YOU WERE BORN FOR? series will be featured in Art of the Real Program 4: Living Among Ruins on November 20th. Motion picture pioneer Alice Guy’s 1906 MADAME A DES ENVIES/MADAME’S CRAVINGS, which will be presented in Program 6: Troublemakers: Subversive Fictions on November 21st.

Even before women had the right to vote, Blaché, in her actions and in her films, expressed female drives, desires and self-determination. In 1911, The Moving Picture News wrote that Alice Guy Blaché, the first female filmmaker in history, was a “fine example of what a woman can do if given a square chance in life.”
