Happy New Year from Gartenberg Media Enterprises! As we ring in 2024, we’re reflecting on screenings, events, and celebrations from last month, in New York City and beyond, related to colleagues of GME, as well as films and/or filmmakers in our collection that we distribute to the North American university market. Notably, a mid-’60s sci-fi flick by Jean-Luc Godard returned to the big screen, while the Film-Makers’ Cooperative hosted a two-night benefit screening of an infamous Andy Warhol film — which GME President Jon Gartenberg was instrumental in rediscovering, in the mid-1980s, while working at The Museum of Modern Art.

On December 2nd, 2023, GME President Jon Gartenberg provided background and context regarding the recovery of Andy Warhol’s film oeuvre at the 60th anniversary benefit screening of Warhol’s SLEEP, hosted by the Film-Makers’ Cooperative at The Bunker at 222 Bowery. Gartenberg was instrumental in the excavation and preservation of Warhol’s films in the 1980s.

Earlier this week, on Tuesday, November 27th, 2023, Turner Classic Movies paid tribute to accomplished documentary filmmaker Nancy Buirski, who passed away earlier this year. Gartenberg Media Enterprises was thrilled to collaborate with Buirski on her final film, the documentary DESPERATE SOULS, DARK CITY, AND THE LEGEND OF ‘MIDNIGHT COWBOY’.

The Film-Makers' Coop Will Host a 60th Anniversary Benefit Screening of Andy Warhol's SLEEP on December 1st and 2nd

Tonight, December 1st, and tomorrow, December 2nd, 2023, at 7pm, the Film-Makers’ Cooperative is hosting a benefit screening of Andy Warhol’s first major film, SLEEP (1963), at The Bunker at 222 Bowery. In the mid-1980s, while working in the Museum of Modern Art’s Film Department, GME President Jon Gartenberg was instrumental in the resuscitation of Warhol’s films, like SLEEP, which were thought to be lost or destroyed after Warhol pulled them out of circulation.

Nancy Buirski's Documentary About John Schlesinger's MIDNIGHT COWBOY Now Available on DVD from Kino Lorber

Last month, Kino Lorber released Nancy Buirski’s 2023 documentary DESPERATE SOULS, DARK CITY, AND THE LEGEND OF ‘MIDNIGHT COWBOY’ on DVD in North America. GME provided scenes from Jonas Mekas’ film REPORT FROM MILLBROOK (1965-1966) and SCENES FROM THE LIFE OF ANDY WARHOL (1990, from THE SIXTIES QUARTET, 1990-1999) for this film. GME also distributes ten titles on Blu-Ray, DVD and DSL from Kino Lorber to the North American university market.

Jerome Hiler Retrospective at Berkeley Art Museum This Month

Since September, the Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive has hosted a retrospective of the work of experimental filmmaker, painter, and stained glass artist Jerome Hiler. Hiler appears with his partner Nathaniel Dorsky in the work of Warren Sonbert, whose catalogue of experimental films, dating back to the 1960s, is exclusively represented by Gartenberg Media Enterprises. Notably, Hiler and Dorsky show up in the final sequences of Sonbert’s THE TENTH LEGION (1967) and NOBLESSE OBLIGE (1981).
