GME Pays Homage to Adrienne Mancia's Passion for Animation and Contributions to International Film Culture Coinciding With This Year's Animation First Film Festival

From Tuesday, January 23rd to Sunday, January 28th, the French Institute Alliance Française will present the seventh annual Animation First Film Festival. The program Best of Annecy 2023, which highlights work from last year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival, will play on Friday, January 26th, at 9:45pm, at the FIAF Florence Gould Hall. The late Adrienne Mancia, a close friend and colleague of GME President Jon Gartenberg going back to the early 1970s, when they both worked in the Department of Film at The Museum of Modern Art, was one of the first curators to introduce the Annecy Film Festival in North America. She was also a jury member in 1993.

Eduardo Darino Retrospective Playing at the Film-Makers' Cooperative

Eight films by legendary filmmaker and animator Eduardo Darino will play at the Film-Makers’ Cooperative on Friday, September 29th, at 7pm, to celebrate Darino’s six-decade career. GME associate Matt McKinzie curated and will present this program. GME highlights the work of Darino’s contemporaries, similarly groundbreaking Latin American moving image artists, in the must-have collection CINE A CONTRACORRIENTE: A JOURNEY THROUGH THE OTHER LATIN AMERICAN CINEMA.

Maria Lassnig Restored Films in Retrospective at Anthology Film Archives

To celebrate Maria Lassnig’s moving-image work, the restoration of her films, and the publication of “Maria Lassnig: Film Works”, Anthology Film Archives is presenting three programs devoted to both her “canonical” films and the newly completed “non-canonical” works that have expanded and enriched our understanding of her cinema.

Félix Dufour-Laperrière’s ARCHIPELAGO offers a contemplative and poetic travelogue along the St. Lawrence River. It expands into a semi-fictional odyssey through the filmmaker’s native province: Quebec, captured in surprising, creative animation using a wide range of techniques. It is an imaginary documentary — linguistic, political, real and dreamt.

"The Discovery of the Century" Painter and Filmmaker Maria Lassnig "Body Awareness" Article in New York Review of Books

In his article “Body Awareness”, in the New York Review of Books, on Austrian artist Maria Lassning, James Quant explores the artist’s extreme, unsparing paintings together with her autobiographical, feminist, dance and experimental films. GME recently added MARIA LASSNIG FILMS IN PROGRESS (US, 1970-1979), together with the bound publication MARIA LASSNIG. FILM WORK (AUSTRIA, 2020) to our collection Lassnig film work, together with the earlier MARIA LASSNIG: ANIMATION FILMS (Austria, 1970-1992), for distribution on DVD/DSL bundle to the North American institutional market.
