This brief, bouncy Gartenberg Media Clip Licensing Sampler, includes scenes from experimental and independent films that GME makes available for clip licensing purposes to film and television productions worldwide. The clips that we license comprise riveting and dynamic imagery of notable scenesters and their lifestyles, featuring Andy Warhol, Jackie Kennedy and extended family, John & Yoko, Miles Davis (shooting hoops with Lennon at a celebrity gathering in Riverdale), Lou Reed, Edie Sedgwick, Gerard Malanga (all performing with the Velvet Underground), Alan Ginsburg, Michelangelo Antonioni (visiting Shirley Clarke and Jonas Mekas at the Film-Makers' Cooperative) and a score of other key figures from the artistic and cultural worlds. GME’s library of clip licensing footage also features unique street scenes of New York City from the 1940’s onward (with a particular focus on the 1960’s), that have been utilized as B-roll footage by various production companies.

This photo for the cover of The Shangri-Las debut album from 1965 is one of many commercial photos by Hugh Bell, whose photographs appeared on dozens of album covers throughout the period. They primarily featured jazz artists, including Sarah Vaughn, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Stitt, Cannonball Adderly, Houston Person, Bill Hardman, Larry Coryell, and the Nat Dixon Quartet. Director Nagy included this cover in her upcoming Roadside Attractions release CALL JANE, starring Elizabeth Banks, Sigourney Weaver, and Kate Mara, about a 1960s housewife (Banks) who joins the Jane Collective to fight for women's rights as she struggles to cope with her need for an abortion during a time of limited social or political support.

A retrospective screening of the films of Nathaniel Dorsky and Jerome Hiler (curated by Francisco Algarin and Carlos Saldaña) is taking place at the Filmoteca de Catalunya (Barcelona, Spain) on January 14 and 15, 2022. To announce the exhibition on the Filmoteca’s website, a film frame of the two filmmakers at a rewind table is featured from Warren Sonbert’s THE TENTH LEGION (1967), which will be released by GME for the first time in a 1080 HD digital format this winter.

GME provided this classic scene of the Velvet Underground’s maiden performance at the New York Society for Clinical Psychiatry from Jonas Mekas’ WALDEN: DIARIES, NOTES AND SKETCHES (1969). The 3 part BBC series covers Warhol’s glorification and critique of American culture, his changing response to the country’s major historical events and finally as a man obsessed with money and security. In his eary Factory days, Warhol was instrumental in the formation of the Velvet Underground, featuring Lou Reed, John Cale, Nico and others, and who went on to be one of the most influential bands in history.
