The Projection Beam to the Digital Stream, From the Museum to the Internet

Former, long-time curators in video and film at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Barbara London and GME President Jon Gartenberg discuss their journeys from the 1970s aspects of institutionalized media collection and exhibition, festival programming and the long road of transitions in media formats, with Jon, especially, reflecting on the never anticipated journey from Warren Sonbert’s mid-1960s theatrical 16mm screenings to those films current web-based release on GME’s newly launched Streamline platform. These early films of Sonbert’s, his first three (all originally released on 16mm in 1966, and the first of several upcoming GME streaming releases of his work), are presented here in new HD digital formats, currently streaming for free (for a limited time). They are also being made available through GME Streamline for digital site licenses to GME’s primary audience of educational institutions in North America, as well as for licensing to more commercial productions. Lots to discuss. And what a long, strange trip it’s been.
