SKY HIGH (United States, 1922, Lynn Reynolds)

Diehard Western fans decried the lack of realism, but audiences flocked to see this film which, more than perhaps any other, changed Tom Mix from a popular Western star into an internationally recognized showman. —Hans J. Wollstein

Tom Mix was one of the silent era’s biggest stars, appearing in 83 feature-length films from 1918 to 1929 — most of which are lost. His name, his face, and trademark white 10-gallon hat are known to classic film fans, but most people have never seen Mix’s iconic Westerns. GME is therefore proud to distribute Mix’s 1922 western SKY HIGH as a digital site license (DSL), in a new 2K digital restoration spearheaded by Undercrank Productions.

In SKY HIGH, Mix battles a ring of corrupt jewel smugglers who have also kidnapped the daughter of the businessman bankrolling their operation. The film features breathtaking scenes filmed on location at the Grand Canyon, adding a stunning backdrop to this action-packed adventure. While Mix rarely used doubles, Bud Creeth was hired as a “stunt pilot,” flying with Dick Grace to film a dangerous stunt which involved Mix’s character hanging from a rope over the Grand Canyon.

SKY HIGH was a commercial success and marked a turning point in Mix’s career, establishing the actor as a major star. In 1998, SKY HIGH was added to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 1998 for “cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.”

SKY HIGH is presented here in a 2K restoration of archival 35mm elements preserved by the Library of Congress and Lobster Films. It features a new theatre organ score by Ben Model, silent film accompanist and founder of Undercrank Productions.
