November 2025 Roundup

Today we recap screenings, events, and celebrations from October related to GME titles, artists, and colleagues. Notably, GME announced a number of titles for distribution, including the films of Jonas Mekas (in conjunction with Re:Voir Video) and a selection of classic and recently-rediscovered films noir. A number of titles that GME distributes to North American universities were also screened in November at the 28th San Francisco Silent Film Festival.

November 6th — GME

On November 6th, GME announced our distribution, in conjunction with Re:Voir Video, of the films of Jonas Mekas as Digital Site Licenses (DSLs) to North American universities. Mekas is widely regarded as the “Godfather” of avant-garde cinema or, as coined by GME, the “Avant-Gardefather.” We currently offer seven features and five shorts by Mekas, in addition to a feature by his brother Adolfas Mekas, a feature by Adolfas’ wife (and Jonas’ sister-in-law) Pola Chapelle, and a feature that Adolfas and Pola made together. (These films are also available on DVD from GME).

November 12th — San Francisco Silent Film Festival

The 28th annual San Francisco Silent Film Festival (SFSFF) took place at the Orinda Theatre from November 12th to 16th, 2025. The largest and most prestigious festival devoted to silent film in North America, SFSFF presented 22 programs of rare and classic silent films, accompanied by live musicians, including a number of recent film restorations. A number of titles by filmmakers that GME distributes to North American academic institutions screened at the festival this year. To view these titles, click here.

November 15th — San Francisco Silent Film Festival

On November 15th, Thomas Christensen was honored at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival for his tireless support of silent film preservation and exhibition thanks to his work as lead curator at the Danish Film Institute. Since its founding in 1972, the DFI has been devoted to preserving Danish film heritage, including masterpieces from the silent era. As lead curator, Christensen has been an integral part of the DFI's initiative to digitize their collection and make it accessible. To this end, the Danish Film Institute launched the series Danish Silent Classics, which consists of DVD releases of both individual silent films and anthologies. Many of these discs contain bonus features as well as filmmaker biographies and filmographies. GME is pleased to distribute a number of these publications to academic institutions in North America. November 24th — GME

Down-on-their-luck detectives. Devious dames. Lust, lies, betrayal, murder... who doesn’t love a good film noir? As November — or should we say, Noirvembercame to a close, we revisited our collection of noir titles on DSL, DVD, and/or Blu-Ray, including films by Curtis Harrington, Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Pierre Melville, and Ida Lupino. From bona fide classics to long forgotten and recently rediscovered diamonds-in-the-rough, these macabre gems are currently available for North American institutional acquisition from Gartenberg Media Enterprises.

November 26th — GME

This Thanksgiving, in recognition of the history and plight of Indigenous Peoples, Gartenberg Media was once again proud to distribute Steve Bilich's Native New Yorker to academic and cultural institutions worldwide as a Digital Site License (DSL).

November 30th — GME

On Sunday, November 30th, Marcel L’Herbier’s L’INHUMAINE (1924) screened at Film Forum with live piano accompaniment by Steve Sterner. GME distributes L’INHUMAINE to North American academic institutions on a Blu-Ray published by Flicker Alley, which features a behind-the-scenes featurette about the making of L’Herbier’s film, a featurette chronicling the creation of the film’s original score, and a booklet consisting of rare on-set photographs and information about the film.
