/Today we recap screenings, events, and celebrations from June related to GME titles, artists, and colleagues. Notably, Warren Sonbert's debut film AMPHETAMINE and its follow-up WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO? screened at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Morgan Library, respectively; both films were later featured in the Adrienne Mancia Streaming Room on what would have been Sonbert's 79th birthday. Additionally, films by Jonas Mekas and Stan Brakhage screened at Anthology Film Archives throughout the month.
June 6th — Anthology Film Archives
From June 6th to 30th, Anthology Film Archives celebrated the centennial of writer, poet, and Beat legend Allen Ginsberg with a series of screenings featuring a wide variety of films that Ginsberg participated in directly or that chronicled his life and work. Featured in this series is Jonas Mekas' GUNS OF THE TREES (1962), which GME distributes to North American universities as a DVD and DSL published by Re:Voir Video. In 2009, GME President Jon Gartenberg curated a film series for the HOWL! Arts Project, which celebrated Ginsberg's legacy. The festival featured a number of films included in Anthology's series, including Mekas' film, as well as Robert Frank's PULL MY DAISY (1959).
June 11th — Morgan Library
On June 11th, from 6-9pm, Warren Sonbert's second film WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO? (1966) screened on a loop at the Morgan Library as part of their celebration Morgan After Hours: Pride. As described in the Library's program note, WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO? sees Sonbert "chronicle his community at work and play in the Janis and Castelli galleries, Warhol’s Factory, the Bleecker Street Cinema, and other iconic spaces for the artistic and social milieu of New York City in the 1960s." In addition to Sonbert's film, Morgan After Hours: Pride consisted of dancing, drinks, live DJ sets, and artwork set against the Library's Gilded Age glamour.
June 12th — Anthology Film Archives
Beginning on Friday, June 12th, Anthology Film Archives celebrated the work of Stan Brakhage with 11 programs in their Essential Cinema repertory series. This series included two screenings of Colin Still's documentary BRAKHAGE ON BRAKHAGE and a number of key Brakhage titles, including THE WONDER RING, MOTHLIGHT, CAT'S CRADLE, DOG STAR MAN, and WINDOW WATER BABY MOVING. GME distributes Brakhage's ANTICIPATION OF THE NIGHT (1959) as a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack and DSL published by Re:Voir Video. This film was a watershed entry in Brakhage's oeuvre, marking the beginning of the lyrical style that would define the bulk of his career.
June 15th — Brooklyn Academy of Music
On June 15th, Warren Sonbert's debut AMPHETAMINE (1966) screened at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in the program Out of the Closet and Into the Co-op: Early Queer Cinema at The Film-Makers' Cooperative. Curated by GME associate and the Coop's Artistic Director Matt McKinzie, in collaboration with BAM guest curator Conor Williams, this program celebrated the Coop's role as an incubator and safe haven for queer experimental films in a pre-Stonewall America.
June 26th — GME
On the occasion of Pride Month and what would have been Warren Sonbert’s 79th birthday, GME presented the artist’s first two films — AMPHETAMINE and WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO? (1966) — to view for free in the Adrienne Mancia Streaming Room. AMPHETAMINE screened at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on June 15th, while WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO? screened at the Morgan Library on June 11th.
