On January 26th, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center will present the 2024 Jerome Robbins Dance Division Annual Symposium, a “day-long exploration of Martha Graham and her legacy as her company celebrates its centennial anniversary.” The Martha Graham Dance Company — the oldest dance company in the United States — was founded in 1926, and the centennial celebration will take place over the next three-year period. Tomorrow’s symposium, which consists of six presentations “by a range of artists and scholars picking up on different themes of Graham’s work,” is free and open to the public.

In the 1960s and ‘70s, Graham and her dance company were documented extensively by photographer Jack Mitchell, whose collection GME proudly represents for exhibition and placement. Over the course of his half century professional career, Mitchell chronicled a unique history in the field of dance — particularly, the evolution of modern dance as pioneered by Graham, and the numerous creators and performers she influenced. Next week, GME will further explore the breadth and depth of the captivating images that emerged from Mitchell’s time photographing Graham, her company members, and her collaborators.
