HAL HOLBROOK AND SHIRLEY BOOTH IN THE GLASS MENAGERIE.
February 12th — GME
In December, GME presented the little-seen 1955 television remake of THE MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET in the Adrienne Mancia Streaming Room. Beginning on February 12th, GME presented another little-seen television remake of a classic story that has been reproduced numerous times for screens big and small: the 1966 CBS Playhouse broadcast of Tennessee Williams’ play THE GLASS MENAGERIE.
Jane Klain, research manager at the Paley Center for Media and a friend and colleague of GME’s, had for years received numerous requests from scholars, researchers, and historians to view this long-elusive version of THE GLASS MENAGERIE. Finally, in the fall of 2015, Klain managed to track down six hours of pristine, unedited takes of the 1966 Glass Menagerie telecast in the archives at the University of Southern California. Klain was subsequently instrumental in identifying and preserving a Kinescope of the broadcast, which is the version that GME showed in the Adrienne Mancia Streaming Room.
The rediscovery and reconstruction of 1966’s THE GLASS MENAGERIE is a feat of archival excavation and film preservation. Over the last 25 years, GME has scoured commercial storage facilitates and uncovered a number of rare or best-quality nitrate elements, which have been repatriated and preserved by archives around the world.

OFFICIAL KEY ART FOR FRAGMENT.
February 19th — GME
Beginning on February 19th, GME was pleased to distribute the omnibus film FRAGMENT, commissioned by the Asian Film Archive. This release is an important expansion of GME's deeper reach into Asian cinema and contemporary short and experimental films, including works from Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines, among other countries.
While the Asian Film Archive is known predominantly for preserving and restoring older, little-seen films by Asian filmmakers (see THE NANYANG TRILOGY, also distributed by GME), FRAGMENT denotes a departure for the Archive as it foregrounds new work by both emerging and established cineastes working across Southeast Asian independent cinema. FRAGMENT is a collage of ten stories, and each film distinctively embraces collective sentiments of vulnerability and fortitude. The omnibus features the work of 10 filmmakers: Kan Lumé (Singapore), Kavich Neang (Cambodia), Lav Diaz (Philippines), Lucky Kuswandi (Indonesia), Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit (Thailand), Phan Dang Di (Vietnam), Sherman Ong (Singapore/Malaysia), Tan Chui Mui (Malaysia), U-Wei Haji Saari (Malaysia), and Wesley Leon Aroozoo (Singapore).
GME also distributes Lav Diaz's BATANG WEST SIDE as a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack and DSL file, published by Edition-Filmmuseum. BATANG WEST SIDE screened on January 14th at the Asia Society as part of their ongoing series Films to See Before You Die.
