GME Distributes Films by Carl Th. Dreyer, Which Play in Anthology Film Archives' Essential Cinema Screenings for January

As part of their Essential Cinema series, a collection of films screened on a repertory basis, Anthology Film Archives will show seven works by Danish filmmaker Carl Th. Dreyer from January 6th to January 13th. Five additional works by Dreyer, distributed by GME on DVD and/or Blu-Ray to the North American university market, are a perfect complement to this program.

In a career spanning nearly half a century, Dreyer made less than fifteen films — the paucity of his output a result of his uncompromisingly ambitious and meticulous approach to filmmaking. While his work received little attention contemporaneously, it remains groundbreaking in terms of both content and style. For example, his 1924 silent drama MICHAEL remains a landmark gay film, chronicling a love story between a famous painter and one of his male models, and was highly controversial when it premiered.

GME currently distributes five out of the nine silent films directed by Dreyer: LEAVES OUT OF THE BOOK OF SATAN (1920), ONCE UPON A TIME (1922), and THE PRESIDENT (1919) on DVD, as well as LOVE ONE ANOTHER (1922) and THE BRIDE OF GLOMDAL (1926) as a combined release, available on both DVD and Blu-Ray.

On January 6th, Anthology will screen Dreyer’s THE PARSON’S WIDOW (1920), followed by a screening of MICHAEL (1924) later in the evening. THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC (1928) and VAMPYR (1932) follow on the 7th, while DAY OF WRATH (1943) plays twice, on the 8th and the 13th. GERTRUD (1964) and ORDET (1955) will play on the 11th and 12th, respectively.

Dreyer is one among several Danish artists and filmmakers GME distributes. Our collection includes films by Benjamin Christensen — widely regarded as “the most innovative director of Danish silent cinema” — as well as four films starring Asta Nielsen, who was regarded as one of the most versatile thespians of her time.
