GME Distributes Films by Sergei Eisenstein, Which Play in Anthology Film Archives' Essential Cinema Screenings for January

As part of their Essential Cinema series, a collection of films screened on a repertory basis, Anthology Film Archives will show five works by Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein from January 13th to January 24th. GME is proud to distribute three Eisenstein titles to the North American university market — BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN (1926/1930), OCTOBER (1928), and OLD AND NEW (1929) — all of which are featured in Anthology’s program.

Eisenstein was a pioneering filmmaker and film theorist who revolutionized film editing with the notion of “the montage of attractions,” in which “arbitrarily chosen images, independent of the action, would be presented not in chronological sequence but in whatever way would create the maximum psychological impact.” This approach is manifest in films like BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN, widely regarded as a masterpiece of international cinema, which is based on the revolt of Russian sailors against their superiors aboard the battleship Potemkin during the Revolution of 1905.

GME DISTRIBUTES THE SERGEI EISENSTEIN CLASSICS BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN (1926/1930) AND OCTOBER (1928) TOGETHER, AS BOTH A TWO-DISC DVD SET AND DVD/DSL BUNDLE.

GME distributes BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN and OCTOBER together, on DVD and as a DVD/DSL bundle. This deluxe two-disc set presents Eisenstein’s films in previously unreleased and painstakingly restored versions. POTEMKIN is presented in German-language versions (both silent and sound), and OCTOBER features the original release together with fragments from the version distributed in Germany. All editions feature the original accompanying scores by Austrian-born composer Edmund Meisel. The ROM section, in addition to the accompanying bilingual booklet, includes a wide range of rare documents and detailed essays on the heavily influential creative partnership of "kindred spirits" Eisenstein and Meisel. Meanwhile, OLD AND NEW is currently available in the eight-disc box set LANDMARKS OF EARLY SOVIET FILM, which includes an accompanying 28-page color booklet.

In addition to the three aforementioned titles, Anthology will screen Eisenstein’s STRIKE on January 13th and IVAN THE TERRIBLE: PARTS 1 & 2 on the 24th. Like GME’s combined release, BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN and OCTOBER will screen together, on the 14th, while OLD AND NEW plays on the 20th.

Additionally, GME distributes works by Soviet filmmakers who helped revolutionized filmmaking as an art form in the first decades of the 20th century, including Dziga Vertov, Lev Kulešov, Vsevolod Pudovkin, and Fridrikh Ermler.
