December 1st is World AIDS Day, an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic and honoring those who we have lost to HIV/AIDS. On this day of consciousness-raising, mourning, and remembrance, GME is honored to welcome Jim Hubbard’s ELEGY IN THE STREETS (1989) on DSL into our library of films currently available for international institutional acquisition.

As November — or should we say, Noirvember — comes to a close, we reflect on our collection of noir titles on DSL, DVD, and/or Blu-Ray. From bona fide classics to long forgotten and recently rediscovered diamonds-in-the-rough, these macabre gems are currently available for North American institutional acquisition from Gartenberg Media Enterprises.
The 28th annual San Francisco Silent Film Festival (SFSFF) took place at the Orinda Theatre from November 12th to 16th. The largest and most prestigious festival devoted to silent film in North America, SFSFF presented 22 programs of rare and classic silent films, accompanied by live musicians, including a number of recent film restorations. A number of titles by filmmakers that GME distributes to North American academic institutions screened at the festival this year.

GME also announced the distribution of Warren Sonbert’s early films — for rental on digital formats — through The Film-Makers’ Cooperative, where they were originally distributed on 16mm beginning in the 1960s.

Released in 1965 and 1984 respectively, WHO KILLED TEDDY BEAR? and MIXED BLOOD both bookend and typify the "New Hollywood" era of the late 1960s and 1970s. Their transgressive explorations of violence, sexuality, social taboos and urban dysfunction emulate such better-known films as MIDNIGHT COWBOY (1969), THE PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK (1971), and TAXI DRIVER (1975).
Celebrate HITCHCOCKTOBER with five lesser-known, early films by Alfred Hitchcock, made in his native England prior to his relocation to Hollywood in the early 1940s.
These features, distributed by GME as Digital Site Licenses, find the director working in various genres outside of the thriller territory that eventually made him a household name and earned him the moniker “The Master of Suspense.”
Today we recap screenings, events, and celebrations from September related to GME titles, artists, and colleagues. At the beginning of the month, GME announced our shift to focusing on the distribution of moving image works available as Digital Site Licenses (DSLs). As part of this transition, we announced our distribution of Steve Bilich’s experimental short documentary NATIVE NEW YORKER as well as the early films of Warren Sonbert and films directed by Pierre Clémenti.

The titles contained within this trilogy are 椰林月 (MOON OVER MALAYA), 血染相思谷 (BLOOD STAINS THE VALLEY OF LOVE), and 唐山阿嫂 (CHINA WIFE). These films were notable in their time for jumpstarting the careers of teen idols Patrick Tse Yin, Pasty Kar Ling, and Nam Hung. Long elusive, the digital restoration of these films was spearheaded by the Asian Film Archive beginning in 2017. Gartenberg Media Enterprises is pleased to distribute these rediscovered classics of Cantonese cinema to cultural institutions worldwide.
