March 2025 Roundup Related to GME Titles, Artists, and Colleagues

Today we recap screenings, events, and celebrations from March related to GME titles, artists, and colleagues. Notably, GME celebrated Women’s History Month by spotlighting works by women filmmakers that we distribute on DSL, DVD, and Blu-Ray. In the Adrienne Mancia Streaming Room, GME streamed Hiroshi Teshigahara's WOMAN IN THE DUNES (which Mancia wrote about at length in Film Comment) and featured a number of rare archival treasures from Mancia's papers. Additionally, MIX NYC publicly shared the filmed Q&A session from their festival's closing night program in November 2024, which featured remarks from GME President Jon Gartenberg, commenting on GME associate Matt McKinzie's film and the other films in the program. At the end of the month, Gartenberg contributed program notes for Abigail Child's screening of her film THE SUBURBAN TRILOGY at the Film-Makers' Cooperative.

The role of women filmmakers has been generally overlooked in the writing of film histories. GME has carefully curated a selection of works from these organizations so as to more fully represent the significant contributions that women filmmakers have made from the birth of moving pictures. In March, GME Celebrated Pioneering Women In Film

On the occasion of March being Women’s History Month, GME spotlighted numerous works by women filmmakers that we distribute on DVD, DSL, and/or Blu-Ray to the North American University Market. Most recently, GME has welcomed films by Ida Lupino, Alexandra Dean, and Suzan Pitt to our collection. Of course, many women have blazed trails in the world of cinema outside of being directors. One such woman, Adrienne Mancia, revolutionized the job of the film curator by championing the work of first-time, independent, and international filmmakers while working as a programmer at The Museum of Modern Art in the 1970s and ‘80s, thereby reshaping film culture in New York City (and beyond)

Nancy Buirski's Documentary About John Schlesinger's MIDNIGHT COWBOY Now Available on DVD from Kino Lorber

Last month, Kino Lorber released Nancy Buirski’s 2023 documentary DESPERATE SOULS, DARK CITY, AND THE LEGEND OF ‘MIDNIGHT COWBOY’ on DVD in North America. GME provided scenes from Jonas Mekas’ film REPORT FROM MILLBROOK (1965-1966) and SCENES FROM THE LIFE OF ANDY WARHOL (1990, from THE SIXTIES QUARTET, 1990-1999) for this film. GME also distributes ten titles on Blu-Ray, DVD and DSL from Kino Lorber to the North American university market.

As we enter October, we’re looking back at a myriad of screenings from last month, in New York City and beyond, featuring films and/or filmmakers in our collection that we distribute to the North American university market. GME-associated artists were well-represented in September — from pioneering filmmakers like Ida Lupino, Jean-Luc Godard, Jose Val Del Omar, Maya Deren, and Man Ray, to contemporary artists like Karel Doing, Rose Lowder, and Lav Diaz. Tomorrow, September 17th, 2023, at 12:30pm, trailblazing director Ida Lupino’s 1951 psychodrama HARD, FAST, AND BEAUTIFUL will screen at the Museum of the Moving Image as part of their ongoing series Queens on Screen. Lupino is a key filmmaker in GME’s collection. We distribute to the North American university market, on Blu-Ray, DVD, and DSL, the director’s 1949 polio drama NEVER FEAR, as well as her nail-biting noir from 1953, THE HITCH-HIKER.
