TONIGHT: Queer Avant-Garde Films Screen at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, co-curated by Jon Gartenberg and Elena Rossi-Snook

Tonight, October 7th, at 5:30pm in the Bruno Walter Auditorium, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts will screen experimental works from the Reserve Film and Video Collection that explores the history of queer filmmakers. The program, titled What’s Happening? Affirmations: A Celebration of the LGBTQ+ Gaze, includes 16mm prints from Jack Smith and Gregory Markopoulos as well as an important selection of films by women filmmakers (such as Barbara Hammer and Sadie Benning) and a seminal work by African-American artist Marlon Riggs.

This event is being held in recognition of LGBTQ+ History Month and is part of a larger series that looks at “deep cuts” from the Reserve Film and Video Collection's historic 16mm film and video holdings. Co-curated by GME President Jon Gartenberg and RFVC Film Collection Specialist Elena Rossi-Snook, this screening features films that carve out creative queer identities from an historically heteronormative society in celebratory fashion.

May 2024 Roundup Related to GME Titles, Artists, and Colleagues

It’s finally June, and with the start of summer officially just around the corner, here is a recap of screenings, events, and celebrations from May, in New York City and beyond, related to GME’s multifaceted projects. Notable exhibition programs include a suite of films by Man Ray at Boston’s Brattle Theatre and a collaboration between the Film-Makers’ Cooperative and Film at Lincoln Center; both programs featured filmmakers and films GME distributes to universities in North America. Also in May, MoMA and Anthology Film Archives mounted retrospectives of the work of Warren Sonbert’s colleagues Nathaniel Dorsky and Jerome Hiler, both of whom GME featured in a compilation reel of clips from Sonbert’s films. Additionally, GME licensed three photographs from the Raimondo Borea collection for two books and a documentary film.

Warren Sonbert Retrospective at the National Gallery of Art June 8th-9th

A series of films by Warren Sonbert, curated and presented by GME President Jon Gartenberg, will screen at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. in June as part of the museum’s annual Pride Month event We Have Always Been Here. Gartenberg adapted these Sonbert programs from the Sonbert retrospective that played at The Museum of Modern Art in May of last year.

GME Remembers Senator Dianne Feinstein This LGBTQ+ History Month

GME remembers Senator Dianne Feinstein, who passed away on September 29th at the age of 90. Feinstein was celebrated for her advocacy, in general, of the queer community and LGBTQ+ rights. She was also captured on film by Warren Sonbert, an experimental filmmaker whose work included depictions of gay life on screen, as well as encoded in the subtext of a number of his films, and whose films are exclusively represented by Gartenberg Media Enterprises. Feinstein appears briefly in Sonbert’s 1981 film NOBLESSE OBLIGE, described by GME President Jon Gartenberg as “a masterfully edited work that features imagery Sonbert photographed of protests in San Francisco following the murders of Mayor George Moscone and Councilman Harvey Milk at the hands of White.”
