Lav Diaz's BATANG WEST SIDE Screens at Spectacle Microcinema on September 2nd

On Saturday, September 2nd, 2023, at 5pm, Spectacle Microcinema (124 S. 3rd Street) will screen Lav Diaz’s 2001 feature film BATANG WEST SIDE. This is the final program in Spectacle’s months-long retrospective of Diaz’s work, which began on March 25th, 2023. This fall, GME will distribute BATANG WEST SIDE, along with Diaz’s 2018 short THE BOY WHO CHOSE THE EARTH, in a forthcoming DVD/DSL combo pack made in collaboration with Edition-Filmmuseum.

In Mussolini’s Italy, repressed Jean-Louis Trintignant, trying to purge memories of a youthful, homosexual episode – and murder – joins the Fascists in a desperate attempt to fit in. As the reluctant Judas motors to his personal Gethsemane (the assassination of his leftist mentor), he flashes back to a dance party for the blind; an insane asylum in a stadium; and wife Stefania Sandrelli and lover Dominique Sanda dancing the tango in a working class hall. But those are only a few of this political thriller’s anthology pieces, others including Trintignant’s honeymoon coupling with Sandrelli in a train compartment as the sun sets outside their window; a bimbo lolling on the desk of a fascist functionary, glimpsed in the recesses of his cavernous office; a murder victim’s hands leaving bloody streaks on a limousine parked in a wintry forest.

American soldiers stationed in Europe in the aftermath of WWII are on leave in Switzerland. Among them is marine Stanley Robin (Cornel Wilde) who loses his heart to a watch seller Suzanne (Josette Day). In the glamorous nightlife of Zermatt, however, seductive Yvonne (Simone Signoret) puts their young love to the test. But Stanley, a lovelorn soldier, moves heaven and earth to win back Suzanne by entering a ski race at the foot of the Matterhorn. There is little time left to consummate the delicate bonds of transnational love.

When GME Streamline was soon after developed, we were able to expand our announcement to include the availability of downloadable HD DSL files of canonical works across the span of motion picture history.

Following our recent GME Streamline announcement of DVD/DSL bundles of films and videos from Spain and Latin America, we continue with one of the major new voices in contemporary Latin American and world cinema, the young Mexican-Canadian filmmaker Nicolás Pereda (b. 1982). Pereda has emerged from seemingly out of nowhere to be feted with career retrospectives, festival screenings, and glowing critical praise. The DVD boxed set entitled NICOLÁS PEREDA brings together his first six feature films made between 2007 and 2012, as well as his short film INTERVIEW WITH THE EARTH (2009).
